The genesis of any artefact is prior to its physical manifestation. The idea is paramount. The artefact should be considered carefully, in-line with current experiences and cognitive processes, beit natural or artificial, conscious and not conscious. But the final objective must always provide the scoping for the idea - do not deviate!
Use the environment as a source of ideas and ponder the significance of your discoveries. Abstract the key characteristics to fuel the creative imperative; it is the imperative that dictates the quality of the final result.
Do not be afraid to think about the idea longer than you consider absolutely necessary. The idea must be fully formed before proceeding to realisation. Reject all approximations that seek to introduce obfuscation, taking particular care with emergent themes attempting to distract from the cause.
Be clear in your minds eye. Your vision must have absolute clarity.
